Planetariums are a wonderful activity for anyone interested in learning about the night sky. Humans have always been fascinated with who we are and where we are going. Planetariums provide an opportunity to journey thousands and millions of light years away to view stars that are often invisible to us in the night sky due to light pollution and allow us to enjoy the wonders of our universe without ever leaving the ground.
The sun and stars have fascinated humans since the beginning of time and Archimedes even built a machine to predict the movement of celestial bodies. He called it a planetarium. By using a massive digital projector, planetariums are able to project images of stars and moons onto the three hundred and sixty degree dome that surrounds the viewers. Nowadays, these projectors are entirely digital and are able to project star clusters and moving images that allow for panning and zooming in the middle of a presentation.
Depending on the time of year, many planetariums offer shows that explore different celestial events occurring during the show or during the days and weeks leading up to an event like Christmas. Recently, in the last part of the twentieth century, planetariums were developed to be fully three dimensional, allowing the presenter to pan and view different celestials objects from different points in space, not just from a perspective on Earth. During these types of shows, a live presenter is normally present. Live shows are preferred over pre-recorded ones because many visitors, so enthralled by the content, ask questions. If a live presenter is not present, questions cannot be answered.
Planetariums are wonderful to go to as romantic getaways because the night sky and wondering where we all came from and why we are here in this vast ocean of space is quite humbling and brings people closer together. Sharing these magical moments in the presence of a very small group of people, often less than one hundred, brings people close and allows them to share a special bond as humanity.
Students also love planetariums because they have inquisitive minds and exploring all of the possibilities in a semi-interactive environment allows for education and great fun. All in all, planetariums are inexpensive and can provide hours of entertainment no matter what type of vacation you're on or what type of evening you have planned.
