Frozen Yogurt

On a hot summer's day there's nothing better than sitting down and getting some frozen yogurt. While often confused with ice cream, there are subtle differences between the two. Frozen yogurt tends to be lower in fat than ice cream and is made with yogurt instead of milk. Frozen Yogurt comes in an assortment of flavors very similar to ice cream and in many cases, in ice cream parlors you are likely to find a selection of frozen yogurts as well.

Frozen yogurt came about in the 1970s but has only recently taken off in popularity compared to ice cream. Most people can't tell the difference between the two and if you're dead set on getting frozen yogurt instead of ice cream you'll have to hunt hard to find the right store for you. Frozen yogurt is made with sugar substitutes, making it somewhat healthier than ice cream. Typically, frozen yogurt stores are found in big cities and near the beach. Because most people don't normally shop for ice cream or frozen yogurt on a daily basis, it became more of a novelty item. That's not to say that you won't find a frozen yogurt store in your small town, it's just that the stores that sells frozen yogurt and ice cream are more prominent in popular cities and beach towns.

One of the most popular frozen yogurt franchises in the U.S. is TCBY, or, The Country's Best Yogurt. They are a chain restaurant and are probably what you'll see if you're in the market for frozen yogurt.

Another stark difference between ice cream and frozen yogurt is the presentation. Yogurt is served in a cup or bowl whereas ice cream is served on a cone. The two can be interchanged if the store sells both kinds but it is typically standard to get one or the other depending on the order. Ordering frozen yogurt is easy and it is usually relatively low in cost. In some stores that are run by families along the boardwalk at a beach for example, the prices may be higher. Also, the flavor selection may be much less in a small store than in a chain. Chains advertise flavors on TV and compete to have the most variety in their shops. There isn't really much danger in eating frozen yogurt except to watch out for a brain freeze!
