Beach volleyball first started in California and over the years, has become an immensely popular sport. It is somewhat akin to volleyball but the only major difference is that it is played on the beach. A net separates the two teams and they try to ground the ball on the other court. Generally, each of the team consists of two players. But at times, six players can also play on each side.
Although beach volleyball these days, is accepted as a competitive sport, it is also regarded as a casual sport that people like to play out on the beach. In fact, it has evolved as part of the cultural set up of the beach life. Since the sports can only be played on the beaches, the people living far away from the beaches are really fascinated by it. Hence, it forms part of their agenda of fun frolic, when they go out tour a coastal town or city.
Many different techniques are used by players, while playing competitive beach volleyball. Line block, cross court block, forearm pass and peeling off the net are some of them. Apart from skill, the sport also requires a high degree of physical fitness and high endurance level in order to excel. You can well imagine – how difficult it must be to jump, block or pass the ball on the sand. Hence, it is one the great way to be fit.
But, beach volleyball also has its share of controversies, especially with regards to the uniforms the girls use during the play. While some sections of conservative people propose that they should be wearing the single piece swim suite, two piece bikinis is preferred due to sun and the heat. The uniforms of beach volleyballs have also known to herald in certain amount of fashion statement in the contemporary society.
With the rising growth and popularity of the beach volley ball as a sport, there has also been a progressive rise in the beach volleyball clubs. Even the traveling agencies arrange outings for the visitors to the beaches, so that they can enjoy the play. So, when you have the time, try your hands with the volleyball on the beach.
