Ice skating really requires lessons if you are going to take it seriously but there are many out on the ice – many self taught. In certain facilities they grade the experience of the skater and have open skating periods for everybody but other times reserved only for serious figure or speed skaters. Rule is to check in advance so you do not get embarrassed.
Great place for meeting other friends, and getting to know each other in a fast moving and dynamic environment. Ice skating not only allows people to have a good time with their novice ice skater friends but also with their seemingly professional ice gurus. If it's your first time out on the ice you'll have to rent skates from the office, just like you would at a bowling alley. Admission onto the ice is normally the cheapest part, but the shoes compared to the price of admission are much more expensive.
As you step out onto the ice, keep the edge to gain your balance. Ice skating is much different than regular skating and be ready to fall quite a bit before you get the hang of it. Don't expect to be able to zip around the rink at high speeds just yet. Once you're able to walk on the ice with your skates, it may be time to try and step it up to a slow glide. Your friends should be glad to help and if you're with a significant other, it's a great bonding experience.
When you're out on the ice, remember that there are other that are trying to skate as well so if possible, do your best to accommodate the other skaters. Don't throw yourself in the way of their skating paths. Instead, wait until they pass to continue practicing your skills. Knee pads are sometimes a good idea to wear under your long pants, just in case you fall.
Wrap up, stay warm, and have some fun on the ice. Skating is a great way to bond with others. Kids also love going to the ice skating rink for birthday parties or an afternoon out with their friends. With fast food style restaurants, you should be able to get a bite to eat and enjoy a few hours out of the house.
