Bowling is a game that is usually considered posh and for the rich. While the game itself is very simplistic in its nature, the actual game is insignificant compared to the atmosphere that it is played in. Normally, players of the game get together at parties or get-togethers to drink and partake in other activities. The game is very easy to play and if you're invited to play or decide to hold your own game of lawn bowling, the cost and setup are very cheap and easy.
Bowling works by taking heavy balls, similar to those of croquet balls, and rolling them down a flat grassy field towards a designated position. This position that the balls have to get close to is designated by a white ball, usually called the jack. When players begin playing a coin is flipped to see who gets to roll the initial white ball to determine the end point. Once the white ball is in place, a scoring mat is placed around it to aid in scoring and distributing points.
Players start at another end of a field and roll their ball, which is slightly disfigured to give an uneven weight distribution across the ball, making the game harder. As the ball is rolled along the field, the objective is to get it to land on the mat as close to the white ball as possible. The closer the ball lands to the jack, the more points you score.
The game is played until there are no more balls in play. Whoever has the most points at the end of the game is declared the winner.
The game isn't played that frequently but for those in country clubs, it may not be hard to find a game of lawn bowling. Manners are everything in games like lawn bowling. Like golf, and many other "posh" sports, there is a certain level of etiquette that is expected to be maintained. The clothing you wear and the company you keep on and off the field are watched meticulously so be careful. But, if you're just playing with a close group of friends on the weekend, it is much easier to be casual. Lawn bowling is a great way to let off some stress with some friends after work or at a party.
