A paddle boat is a small water craft that usually sits two people. The passengers of the paddle boat pedal against pedals in front of them, similar to pedaling a bicycle, and this turns a wheel underneath the boat, pushing water from the front of the boat, backwards, moving you through the water. Because the wheel is large and there are usually multiple people pedaling, pushing the boat forward is easy.
Unlike conventional boating that requires an oar to paddle the boat along, paddle boating is a an easier time because unlike traditional rowing that requires strenuous exercise to constantly move the oar through the water, paddle boating is more relaxed and requires much less effort. Paddle boats are flimsy crafts and are designed for small bodies of water without any strong currents or obstructions. Paddle boating is dangerous in strong currents and may result in you flipping your boat and getting seriously injured. For this reason, even if you are wearing a life jacket, it is unadvisable that you take your paddle boat out into rapids or the ocean.
Paddle boats are easy to move forward because of their intuitive design but turning them is a different story. You will probably have a few laughs with your paddle boat partner as you try and coordinate a turn by simply pedaling on one side of the boat and not the other. Sometimes paddle boats will have seats in the back of them, creating a car like configuration, that will enable the boat to seat up to 5 people. These extra seats usually also have hand crank pedals or foot crank pedals as well to reduce the work load on the entire crew.
Paddle boating is relatively simple to do and is a great idea for a weekend with your significant other or family members. If you come across a large enough or well known lake or stream, you're bound to find a paddle boat rental facility. You can also look up locally what boat rental places there are in your area. You shouldn't expect to pay much for a paddle boat for a few hours. What you should expect though is to have a relaxing and fun time.
