Depending on your location, the opportunity to ski and snowboard may be available. In order to ski or snowboard you must have a cold environment that can produce snow atop mountains or slopes. Typically, in the mid-western United States, there are mountain ranges that skiing and snowboarding can be done on. These mountain ranges are covered in snow for the majority of the year but in the hot summer, they'll most likely be closed.
The Rocky Mountain Range in the United States is a mountain range that runs for hundreds of miles through the country and along this range are multiple ski resorts. These resorts are typically small towns or communities with log cabins for rent. Skiers are able to call in advance and reserve a cabin for however long they want. Similar to a hotel room, log cabins have bedrooms and additional rooms similar to a house with things like kitchens, living rooms, and even movie theaters in the higher end resorts.
Because skis and snowboards are so expensive to purchase, many resorts will have the option to rent skis or snowboards from them for a reasonable cost. If you're new to the sport, there's no sense in buying all new equipment.
Safety on the mountains is paramount. First of all, in order to get up to the top of the mountain to ski or snowboard down you will have to take a ski lift up which is simply a chair attached to a long wire that goes to the top of the mountain, similar to a telephone pole system in which you ride in a cart along the wires to the top. Make sure you follow the instructions for getting on the ski lift as they can be dangerous if you're not careful. Also, mountains are ranked with difficulties. These difficulties are displayed as colored diamonds on signs throughout the resort and your ski resort will be glad to help you figure out which runs and paths are safe for you. Lastly, if you've never skied before, it is recommended that you hire an instructor. They normally aren't cheap but if you get an all inclusive ski package vacation, you won't have to worry about the cost. Instructors will make sure you get the most out of your skiing experience.
When you're thinking of going on a skiing vacation always be sure to book in advance. Skiing and snowboarding are very popular events and if you don't plan ahead you won't be able to get a spot in the cabin you want. Stay safe and stay warm.
