Skydiving

Skydiving is definitely not for the faint of heart. Those with a desire for a massive adrenaline rush and those wishing to add a very special memory to a holiday or weekend will love skydiving. It would probably be silly to note that if you're scared of heights, planes, or falling, skydiving is not for you. But for those willing to take a chance and feel the wind rushing by your face and falling at speeds faster than many production cars can achieve, skydiving is for you.

For the uninitiated, skydiving consists of going up in a small personal aircraft, usually to about five thousand feet. Once the target height is reached, anything lower is unsafe, the pilot of the plane will give the go-ahead to the skydiver. A door will open on the side of the aircraft and the diver will be allowed to jump. Beginning skydivers will not be able to go at it alone though. Usually strapped to another, more professional, skydiver's body, the first timer and the professional skydiver will jump using the same parachute. Because it takes years of practice to become good at skydiving, it is often required by law that people go in tandem for their first few dives.

Skydiving is often considered dangerous because of the fear it invokes. But fatalities are very uncommon and the fear of something going wrong shouldn't deter first timers. Fatalities often occur when jumpers push the limits and jump from too low of an altitude, resulting in insufficient time for them to deploy their parachute. Jumpers often carry two parachutes, one as a main and one for a backup. In special cases, should a jumper not be to pull the cord to deploy the main parachute, an altimeter can act as the pull device, and it will deploy the parachute for the jumper automatically at a certain altitude.

Be sure to follow all instructions when going skydiving. There is no point in risking danger to yourself or to anyone else. Most importantly, do not panic if something goes wrong in the air. The instructors and tandem jump partners are there to handle all eventualities and will ensure your safe landing. If done correctly, skydiving can be very fun and very exciting for adrenaline junkies everywhere.
