Windsurfing

For those looking to try one of the most exhilarating and challenging water sports out there, windsurfing is for you. Windsurfing is very similar to surfing in that the board that is used is about the same shape and size as a surf board. What separates the two sports is that instead of riding just a board, windsurfing attaches a mast and sail to the board for control.

Riders catch the wind with the sail by turning the mast around and propel themselves forward. To steer, there is a combination of moving the board back and forth and handling the sail, and moving it in and out of the wind, in order to catch the wind and move the board in the direction that you want. Because of the amount of dexterity that is necessary to properly steer a windsurf, the sport is often reserved for experts on the water and isn't normally tried by amateurs.

If you're dead set on trying windsurfing and you're near a coastal region, it's fairly easy to get started. There are normally plenty of board rental facilities that have both the equipment you need and the instructors to help you get started. It is not a sport that is designed to be done close to the shore so if you're afraid of the deep ocean, this sport may not be for you. The sport is expensive if you want to get fully involved in it but for a day on the water, it is easier and cheaper to rent a board and will probably cost the same as spending a day at an amusement park.

The sport has a steep learning curve and may take more than a few trial and error runs to get the hang of it but once you do catch the wind and head out onto the open water, it's a blast. The open water is often dangerous and the hazards associated with any water sport should not be taken lightly. Listen to your instructors and follow their advice to ensure the safety of yourself and others while windsurfing, and above all else, have fun!
