IMAX Theater

IMAX theaters are a type of cinema experience that is unparalleled in the world of film. With almost 300 theaters worldwide, you’re almost guaranteed to find one in any major city in the world. IMAX theaters present movies on screens that are usually about seventy feet wide and fifty feet high. Taking a semi parabolic shape, theatergoers are immersed in a massive screen as they watch the presentation.

The theaters around the world are often present in museums, playing an array of different films. About half of the IMAX theaters in museums have a selection of educational and documentary style films for their viewers while others are put in place to play new and popular films. Admission into these IMAX cinemas will cost a little bit more than the regular cinema because of the unique experience. IMAX film, because of its size, needs to run at almost three times the speed of regular film and viewers often do not know what goes on behind the scenes at IMAX theaters. It is quite spectacular the amount of work it takes to project such a massive image onto a screen hundreds of times the size of an average television. 

Those interested in getting a different type of IMAX experience can try and find a theme park that has utilized IMAX’s dome type experience in which images are projected in a 360 dome around the viewer. Like a planetarium, these experiences immerse the viewer in the video and the experience and take them on a journey. 

Films in an IMAX theater usually tackle scenarios that the normal viewer would not experience, like climbing a mountain, or journeying into space. Conventional films used in regular cinemas are not commonly used because of the sheer size of the film reels and the cost to produce a movie in a high enough resolution to be reproduced on the massive screen. As digital projection technology becomes more commonplace though, IMAX theaters will be providing more and more popular films in their theaters because of the ease of use and lack of film reels.

If you are looking to educate yourself or experience a documentary like never before, the IMAX Theater is great. If you are lucky enough to find one that plays regular films, the experience is unforgettable and you may find it hard to go back to the regular theater all together!
