Last Monday of May

The last Monday of May is celebrated as the Memorial Day in the United States of America. It was originally known as the Decoration Day and is regarded as the day to remember the supreme sacrifices made by the man and woman in the military service of the country. Although it was limited to honor the Union soldier's of the American Civil War, later on the day was exclusively marked for the remember those, who gave up their lives in the service of the country. It was first observed in the year 1968 and it was declared as a federal holiday in 1971. Now it is a ‘Day of Remembrance’ for those killed in the wars for the country.

The origin of the Memorial Day is traced to Waterloo, N.Y, where it was first observed by the people as mark of reverence to the soldiers who laid their lives during the Civil War. On the Memorial Day, flowers and flags are place on the cemeteries and memorials of the men and women who sacrificed their lives. The day's activities also include parades. The local fire and police departments along with the boy and girl scouts join the parade and participate in the ceremonies. The flags also fly half-mast till noon local time.  

Apart from commemorating the day in fond memories of the soldiers of the nation, the Memorial Day is also an occasion of family congregation. Sporting events are also conducted where young boys and girls participate. People follow the bands to the cemeteries in the towns. Concerts are also held in different towns and cities. The most famous is the National Memorial Day Concert that is being organized each year in the west lawn of the United States Capitol. People pay respect to the brave and courageous people who laid down their lives for the nation, to the accompaniment of music.

Besides remembering and paying homage to the soldiers, the Memorial Day is famous as the time for joy and merriment. People go on picnic. Barbecues parties are held in the neighborhood.

Many communities also take up special memorial observance meetings. It is generally held in the churches or town memorial park. In order to enlighten the new generation about the significance of the Memorial Day, all Americans observe the moment of remembrance and respect at 3P.M.The significance of the Memorial Day for the people of America is really important.
