Veterans Day

The 2nd Monday of November

Originally known as Armistice Day, this holiday was celebrated in honor of American veterans of the First World War. It was originally celebrated on 11 November, the day the war ended (1918). Now, it is the feast of all veterans of all wars in the United States. The Organization of Veterans hold parades and the president lays wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, located across the Potomac River in Washington, DC.

The Veterans Day was celebrated in order to commemorate the heroism of the American soldiers and also show gratitude to the soldiers who died in the war. Hence, there were parades and public meetings as a mark of respect to the war veterans. Normal business is also stopped and people congregate at the meetings.

In the year 1938, the Veterans Day got the legal sanction of a national holiday. It was then known as the Armistice Day. The day was specifically meant to honor the war veterans of the World War I. During the World War II, the American army fought the greatest war in the history of the country. So, in 1954, after the Korean war, the US Congress, amended the act and coined the term ‘Veterans’ in place of ‘Armistice’ in order to at the request of the different war veteran's organization. Since that day, the second day in the month of November is celebrated as the Veterans Day. To this effect, President Eisenhower issued the proclamation.  

On the Veteran's Day, the ceremony is held at the Arlington National Cemetery. A color guard signifying the three wings of the military service is made in order to honor the Tomb of Unknown inside the memorial amphitheater. Parades and different military exhibitions are held throughout the country. This celebration, signifying a great tradition is observed at different regional centers as well. The schools, kindergarten organize different crafts programs, members of marines march along the streets, the museums show war exhibits and functions are organizes at all sections of the society. Celebrations are also held at the different US embassies all over the world.  

The Veteran's Day has become part of the culture and traditions of the American people over the years and is being regarded to preserve to sense of pride, heroism, commitment to the country and above all, as a way to honor the war veterans for their bravery and sacrifice.
