Golden Gate Bridge

Bridge «Golden Gate» links the two shores of the same passage together, which is the entrance to the largest natural harbor. The width of the strait is about three miles and over time, prompted the need to bridge the gap between the two sides. The first draft of the bridge's blueprints appeared over a hundred years before the start of construction. The Golden Gate Bridge was completed on 5 Jan, 1933 and the pedestrian bridge across it was opened shortly after on 27 May, 1937.

Bridge «Golden Gate» has long been considered to be «the eighth wonder of the world». The calculations in its design were not done using any computer equipment exception an adding machine and log lines. The bridge is 2730 meters long and the central span is 1280 meters wide. After 20 years of being open, that record was broken. During the high tide, the bridge is 227 meters above the water. The thickness of the main rope, which is used to hold the bridge, is 93cm. Each cable is capable of supporting up to 95 tonnes. The Golden Gate Bridge is not accidentally orange-red. First, the paint contains a lot of lead that can protect steel from corrosion. Secondly, because of the constant fog, the bridge should be visible from afar so as not to interfere with safe navigation. At the time, the United States Navy offered to paint the bridge yellow and put on a black strip. Fortunately, the bee color was taken to kindly by admirers.

The most popular spots that tourists visit are the South (San Francisco Side) Vista Point and the North (Marin Side) Vista Point. By traveling from one vista point to the other, would present you with the opportunity to appreciate the Golden Gate Bridge and its size and height. While the stretch is 1.7 miles long the middle portion of it is as high as 220 feet above the water. Guided tours are also available but visitors are allowed to approach only in the eastern side of it during the day, due to safety reasons. You can also bicycle over it in the early hours of morning. Many bicycle rental services are available, who would also guide you regarding the routes to follow. They also walk with the tourists on the Golden Gate Bridge and enlighten about the historical aspects of it – how it was named, and the structural design behind it.
