Delaware Travel Guide

With a history of land reclamation, Delaware starts with a 16th century saga after the disembarkation of the Spanish and Portuguese on the coast of North America. This is the first US state among all states. The date of its foundation was 7 Dec., 1787. This date is written on the flag the state adopted in 1913. The flag is made of blue and yellow - the color format alluded to General George Washington. The creators of the flag tried to make an effort to include all of the important components of life and the state in general. The ship represents the trade, wheat, corn, ox and the farmer - agriculture, the soldier - a revolution. The inscription on the tape reads: Liberty and Independence (this is the motto of Delaware).

The state was named after Governor Lord De La Vera, but the state has several nicknames: The First State (understand why), Diamond State (according to legend, Thomas Jefferson described Delaware «jewel» in other states because of its strategic location on the east coast), The State of Blue Cock (a symbol of the state), Small Wonder.

The Flower of Delaware is the peach, the bird - a blue rooster. During the Revolution, soldiers from the County of Kent (which is on the territory of present-day Delaware) took with them, for fun, fighting roosters. This fun quickly spread throughout the army. And during the battle of Delaware, soldiers fought so bravely that they were compared with those birds.

Area Delaware - 2,5 thousand square miles; the population - about 784 thousand people. The economy is based on the state of light industry (food, paper and cellulose, chemical) and agriculture (breeding of poultry, corn, beans, etc.).

The capital of the state - the city of Dover, the major cities: Wilmington, Newark, Milford, Seaford, and others.

Where to go

Dover - the capital of Delaware is located in the county of Kent (a historical and geographical center of the state). The city has a variety of historical and cultural attractions and a curious mixture of old traditions and modern high-tech culture. Here you can see the Amish (sect, whose followers refuse to use the achievements of civilization), to visit the exciting road races and horse races, to explore the colonial history in the quiet museums (there are about 20 in the city, entrance to most of them free), or to admire the giant military cargo plane C-5 Galaxy at the exhibitions of military equipment.

New Castle Court House Museum - one of the oldest buildings in the United States Court. It was built in 1732. In 1881 the court moved to the city of Wilmington, and later the old building in Newcastle was converted into a museum. Visitors can get acquainted with the history of Delaware's colonial times and early judicial and public authorities of those times.

Wilmington - Delaware's largest city, was founded in the early 17th century and had the past era of the Swedish, Danish and British rule. It was officially recognized by the state in 1832, and has since been actively developed and has now become an industrial and financial center of the state. The town is interesting from an architectural point of view because one can find buildings of various eras and styles: Italian Villa, Romanesque and Gregorian styles, Art Deco, and much more.
